Chilean Ibarra pours 27 points in victory over Puerto Rico

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, April 24, 2019 - Vicente Ibarra scored a match-high 27 points, including three blocks and two aces, to carry most of the load of Chile in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 26-24) victory over Puerto Rico on day one of the U19 Boys’ Pan American Cup on Wednesday at Ricardo Arias Pavilion in Santo Domingo.

The tournament offers two tickets to the U19 FIVB World Championship to be held in Tunisia next August.

Vicente Valenzuela helped in defense with 6 blocks among his 9 points while Antar Derpich added 12 in the victory. Sebastian Negron and Ismael Hernández each had 16 points for Puerto Rico and Diego Rosich finished with 13.

In another match on Wednesday, host Dominican Republic swept Guatemala in straight sets 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-17) to close the first day of actions.

Fuhit Edoard Cadit scored 20 points, including three blocks and three aces, to lead the attack for the home boys. Brian Muñoz added 11 points and Dawilin Méndez contributed 9 points in the victory.

The home side held a 9-0 margin in service winners and of 6-4 in blocks. They overwhelmed their opponents in attacks 37-15.

Earlier in the day, Cuba scored a cruising victory over Nicaragua 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-12) relying on 16 blocks that almost completely neutralized their opponents. Cuba is already qualified to the world event as champion of NORCECA.

In Thursday’s matches, Guatemala meets Nicaragua in a Central American duel, Chile goes against debutants Mexico while Cuba clashes with Dominican Republic.
